Per the History of Lehigh County The ancestor of the MIller family, originating in the northwestern part of Lehigh county, was Christian Miller, Sr. who was born in Switzerland, and emigrated to Pennsylvania, settling first in Longswamp Twp, Berks Co. He then located in Lynn Twp. but was driven back, durning the French and Indian War by the savage Indians, to Berks Co. Later, however he again returned to Lynn Twp. and settle upon his land which he had taken up0 by warrant, in 1749, 1750, and 1767, in all 208 acres and later he added other tracts, and had two sons; Andrew and Christian.
Per the History of Lehigh County - Vol 1 Lynn Twp pg 837
One mile east of Lynnville, on the Miller homestead, there is a private burial place, long known as the "Miller graveyard". It is located at the corner of two public roads, in dimensions 50x50 feet with a stone wall in fairly good condition along the two sides adjoining the public roads ,the other two sides being enclosed by a fence. One Christian Miller had settled here at a very early period. He and his wife, some children and grandchildren and descendants of the fourth generation, wer buried here. Among those buried there are the following:
Christian Miller Sr 1706-1785 Christian Miller Jr 1741-1778 Anna Elizabeth Miller 1757-1830 Andreas Miller 1739-1817 Peter Miller, Sr 1772-1855 Maria Magd Miller 1770-1863 (wife of Peter) George Miller 1798-1865 Mary M. Miller 1805-1874 (wife of George)
It is noteworthy of mention that in August 1913, one of the descendants, Mr Reuben Miller Of Millport, Carbon Co. with the encouragement and assistance of other descendants, improved this private burial place at great expense by putting around it a concrete wall, by securly fastening the upright tombstones in cement beds and by covering it entire surface with concrete so as to prevent the growth of weeds, an improvement which has won for him much favorable comment.
Note: My wife Susan and I went to the Miller graveyard in June 2001 and the cement "pad" was indeed keeping down the weeds a few of which had sprung up in the joints in the pad. The previously named stones are still there. the concrete wall is still in good repair and there is a wrought iron gate to enter the graveyard. Photos we took are in the Christian Miller scrapbook.
